Conditioning sewn in hair extensions is easy in comparison to conditioning glued-in hair extensions as the conditioners can be applied to your growth hair as well as the whole length of the sewn in hair weave if necessary.
Using conditioners on human hair weave is part of nourishing the hair (which also includes using hair oils); the other two parts of hair weave care are daily styling (styling products, styling tools and moisturising) and washing weave hair, but before we get down to the details, it's time for short detour.
A short detour to discuss the deadness of hair
There are many adverts for conditioners that tell us the product will "revive" or hair, but technically this isn't really the case, once hair is outside of the skin, it's dead and cannot be resurrected under any circumstances.
The only living part of hair is found beneath the skin - you can read all about it in this article: http://www.hairfinder.com/hairquestions/hairgrowth.htm if you don't
This (dead) hair is mainly made up of protein and it's the protein in hair that makes it strong.
Protein is used in conditioners to help repair (reconstruct) hair, however protein also dehydrates hair; this means the hair can become brittle and fragile.
Using a conditioner with added oils will help prevent the hair drying out. If that's not possible then human hair weave (and your own growth hair) should be moisturized after deep conditioning.
Good conditioners contain proteins that are absorbed by the hair and help rebuild each hair strand internally.
Great conditioners also contain oils to make the hair supple and seal in moisture.
Why Should Sewn In Hair Extensions Be Conditioned?
There’s a very high probability that the texture and colour of your sew in human hair weave was achieved through chemically processing the hair to create waves, curls, straight textures and colours (even dark browns and black).
Whenever human hair is subjected to chemical processes like this, the internal structure of the hair is altered – it has to be in order for the process to work; but it’s also weakened. This means by the time you get the hair weave sewn into your hair, it may be looking its best but it's not at the height of health.
Different Ways to Condition Sewn In Hair Extensions
There are different ways to condition your sewn in hair extensions (and your growth hair too, should you wish) to keep repair the hair and keep it strong.
Daily Styling
Well not quite daily, but every few days, the sew in hair weave could be lightly misted with a leave in conditioner in addition to your moisturizing regime.
Washing
Sewn in hair weave can be conditioned in the way that you'd normally condition growth hair - apply, lather, rinse and don't repeat.
Go deep: Alternatively you can deep condition human hair weave extensions along with your growth hair; simply apply conditioner to damp hair weave, distribute it with a shower comb, towel wrap and leave for up to two hours and then rinse.
Go deeper: Instead of a towel, put on a shower cap and use a hair dryer on a warm setting for about 15 minutes and then rinse out the conditioner.
After conditioning the hair, moisturize or use hair oils to seal moisture into the hair.
Sewn in hair extensions (human hair) can be conditioned around twice a month, with a deep condition at least once per month.
